Special K was smashed up by GGG in five rounds in the battle of the initials as Kell Brook fell to Gennady Golovkin.

Brook was attempting what seemed the impossible, stepping up two weight divisions to take on unbeaten pound-for-pound king Golovkin and so it proved.

After being beaten up by GGG to suffer his first pro loss in his 37th fight, Brook was left needing the help of the AA - and every other emergency service.

Brook is a class fighter and arguably the best welterweight in the world.

But against Golovkin, who was cheered on by his pal Zlatan Ibrahimovic, he was out of his depth as the Kazakh showed why he is the most-feared fighter on the planet.

The fight lived up to the hype from the first bell. Golovkin quickly closed down the ring and backed Brook up on to the ropes in the challenger's own corner.

He unleashed a left hook to the ribs which visibly hurt Brook and the Sheffield fighter was momentarily in trouble.

But he rode out this storm and landed a couple of right hands towards the end of the round to signal his defiance.

Brook continued the attack in the second - to the delight of the home fans inside The O2 - and landed hooks and upper cuts to make the champion wince. That had to be his round.

Brook went down at the start of the third, but referee Marlon Wright rightly ruled that it was a slip.

Golovkin then hurt Brook with another left hook to the body and the challenger turned to his corner and pointed to his right eye.

He clearly had a problem and this was an invitation to GGG to pepper it with jabs to make it even worse.

It was the war we all hoped it would be and with his right eye swelling up, Brook knew he had to keep on the offensive.

Golovkin pinned Brook on the ropes at the start of the fifth and unloaded, promoting the Sheffield fighter to outstretch his arms to say he wasn't hurt.

But Brook was hurt and his trainer Dominic Ingle frantically waved the white towel from his corner as the shots continued to come in from GGG before Wright saw it and agreed to stop the fight one minute and 57 seconds into the round.

The crowd did not like this abrupt ending to a fantastic contest and booed, but Ingle was right to step in because Brook had stopped throwing punches.

Brook will live to fight another day and deserves huge credit for the way he went toe-to-toe with the wrecking machine that is Gennady Golovkin.

For Golovkin this was his 23rd straight stoppage to retain his WBC and IBF middleweight belts and the title of the world's best fighter.
