Melania Knauss ternyata tidak kalah kontroversial tinimbang suaminya, Donald Trump. Pada malam pembukaan Konvensi Nasional Partai Republik, mantan model berdarah Slovenia itu menuai puja-puji atas pidatonya. Namun, masalahnya, fokus pembicaraan bukan bernasnya isi orasi, tapi kemungkinan bahwa pidato itu hasil plagiasi.

Pada bagian termaksud, perancang arloji itu tengah membicarakan nilai-nilai keluarga yang diwariskan kepadanya seiring dengan bertambahnya usia. Pihak yang kali pertama menandai kemiripan kata-kata Melania dan Michelle Obama, istri Presiden Amerika Serikat, Barack Obama, pada Konvensi Demokrat 2008, adalah akun Twitter @JarrettHill.

"KOREKSI," tulisnya dalam bahasa Inggris, "Melania mencuri (bagian pidato) Michelle.' Kemudian, ia menempelkan bagian termaksud pada akunnya serta penekanan pada paragraf yang kemungkinan besar dinukil. Di ujung kicauan, ia meletakkan tanda pagar (tagar) untuk topik Konvensi Partai Republik, #GOPConvention. Dalam wawancaranya dengan laman CBS News, Meliana mengaku telah menyiapkan sendiri sebagian besar isi pidatonya. "Aku menulis (pidato itu) - dengan sedikit mungkin bantuan," ujarnya, Senin (18/7).
